I got an email from a coach in Southern California who is putting together a Parlauf Relay. It sounds like an interesting and fun workout for an early season effort.  I thought that we might be able to do a Postal version of the same thing. Back in the day there were all kinds of Postal meets. You contest the race at your own site and then results are posted from across the country to see who came out on top. Here is the description from the meet director:

What are the Parlauf Relays?

The competition will consist of ONE relay (5 x 200m x 8). Each team will consist of 5 athletes, and each of the 5 athletes will run 200 meters 8 times. Therefore the total distance covered (20 laps) will be 8000 meters (1600 meters per athlete; in 200 meter increments). The relays purpose is to provide you an opportunity to build interest in your program by giving your athletes an early chance to compete against some of the finest athletes Southern California has to offer. The meet records are 19:02.1 for the boys and 20:59.8 for the ladies. Just over 28.5 second average per 200 meter for the guys and just under 31.5 seconds for the ladies.

Any takers? I've put the event on March 1st. If that exact date doesn't work for you, try to keep yours as close to it as possible. Put together as many teams as you can field and have some fun.

I am an assistant coach in the very small town of Orting, WA... I sent an e mail to our head coach Lisa Sorrell about this idea and I will see what her reply is, but I think that she will like to do this so I will keep in contact with you... If you have any questions please e mail me at Crispy6723@yahoo.com...

Thank You,

Good deal. David Bowdoin was checking to see if he can configure relay entries for teams of 5. Even if we can't do entries for each individual kid we may be able to enter a team and post results for the various teams (A, B, C, etc...) of our school.

I will email you as we get closer.

Something else we might need to look at for this is the number of relays that we can enter on the site.  Many teams will want to run a number of their kids in this...and you can only enter 12 teams into any relay...2 var, 5 JV, 5 F/S.

Life is full of hurdles...and NONE are impossible.

I like the idea, and will try to have the New Hope team participate.

It does not appear that we will be able to use athletic.net for entries. No problem though. Just run your Parlauf Relay and send me your results at:

jvolk (at) stmarysschool (dot) us

and I will list the team times in the welcome message on the Parlauf Relay page.

Several of you mentioned running in less than favorable conditions (rain, cold, wind, etc...). Congrats on making the first ever Postal Parlauf Relays a success. My kids enjoyed it, but it took auite a bit to explain to one runner that we would be the only team that would be on the track at that time. he was waiting for the other teams (from WA and IL?) to arrive. I think I have all the schools' results posted. University HS (IL) was the winner of both the girls and boys events. I hope to try this again next year and get even better response.
