We've released the beta version of a new report that details the history of a course in XC.  To try it out, go to any meet, and click "View History" next to "Course" under the Meet Info tab.

Here is an example:

As always, let us know what you like to see added or changed on this report!

1. this is awesome

2. it should be a supporter feature -- you know my stance on that :-)

we need to keep you guys well paidn and motivated to continue your improvements -- perhaps give a limited version to all

The plus signs need a explaination perhaps -- though I figured them out ... you show only the fastest time for each athlete, but then I don't really get the top 100 times say either.

This is a huge data pull and load on your server.  I fully support your free access policy and hope you continue it, but I do think real pearls like this should be saved for your supporters to assist in your growth.  However I am not privy to your business plan.

Reported it to the Michigan folks over at http://michigancrosscountry.com Standing by for feedback if you want to subscribe to that thread you'll see if there is any.

A great feature... I think we need it to keep athletes interested and motivated... perhaps a top 100-200 but those are the ones already motivated - but please keep this part of the general package.. Parents (grandparents etc..), athletes, coaches all like this and need to see this.. I dislike the other track websites that REQUIRE a fee to see stats...

It is a MAJOR plus....

Again... thanks... for all that you do for the sport -

But Joseph, if you pony up the $25 annual supporter fee (as I think we all should -- what a deal for this wonderful site) then your people will see it because it will be a feature of your team page.  So it isn't asking parents and grandparents to join to see it.  Really clever people might even figure out to enter through a supporter page to see it perhaps ... but it does make supporter status more beneficial and I think that in the end is a good thing.

If we all say what a great site, let us all use it for free ... well it isn't free they have costs for personnel an servers so forth.

Their business plan is theirs -- I was only offering my suggestion.  But if you don't give some value added for teams that choose to become supporters, eventually the site will not succeed and what a tradedgy that would be for all of us.  These guys have improved something every single day since I have been here (about six months perhaps) and I want to see that enthusiasm and energy continue.

Nice feature!

For those (rare?) courses that don't change often it will be nice to be able to compare historical performances within a year and between years.   Hmm, now we'll have an incentive and a need to go back and insure the distances of the meets are all correct - I know that lots of old meets have inconsistent distances reported in our area.    Might be fun to calculate an estimated time difference between different courses using this information too.

So it is fun I can see that the boys median was +16 and girls +19 at the state meet today.

It would be nice if I could filter results by year (including "hidden" results) and print this years only with rankings.

Awesome, I'm lov'in it!

Data on two lines so I'll have to work really hard to get it on one line to sort by year for example.

What about an export data function?

Love this report.   I like it so much it has made me clean up some old results with inconsistent distances and divisions.  =)

A few enhancement requests:

- Want to provide a way to index not only by distance but also by layout or course year or unique label or something else.   For example - One of our courses (William Jessup) has stayed at same distance last 3 years but they changed the layout significantly so 2007 times should not be compared with 2008/2009 times due to different course layout.

- Want to determine not just Best times but also Average or Median times.   I think I saw that before but don't see it now.   I only see Best right now.   Maybe I am missing the feature somewhere.

- Want to be able to "baseline" and compare different courses so we can get approximate time differences between courses.    There are various online tools to do this today but would be nice to do it based on athletic.net info.

I have finished loading the Washington State Meet Results for 1997 thru 2009(these are the years of the 5k course at Pasco).  That means that there 4723 boys and 3954 girls in the database.  Presently the athletic.net site is very slow giving you the "course history" with this large amount of data.  I have had numerous good comments from coaches about this addition.  Josh and staff have been very helpful getting the data on the school calenders.  Maybe the solution is to have a "Top 100 list" and also a selection that would list the rankings for a particular school such as what is done for results where there is a "ALL Results" and a "School Result" thus avoiding the trying to retrieve all 8000+ entries.

As to the median times, Josh said that he had to remove that bit of code because some courses with a lot of history were taking more than ten minutes to load because of all the calculations!  =)  He's working on a solution that's a little quicker.

Miss them already, in fact wish to add average time which is more significant.  Seems maybe it could be a stored value vs a calculation for all but the current year?

I agree on some central point figure.  If average (means) is too calculation-intensive, perhaps the median could be used - more significant in small data sets anyway.

Median is an easy statistic that can be done by hand-Median is simply the middle number.  So if your course has 1200 times, look for the 600th time and that would be your median time
