Photo tagging will enable us to make better use of photos, placing them in appropriate locations and presenting relevant information when they are displayed.  We will have appropriate controls in place for those teams and/or athletes who wish to opt out of this new feature.

The first phase of the project, designing a tagging system, has reached a stage that we would like to begin sharing it with a limited audience.  Any feedback will be appreciated.

Sample album that you may play with:
http://www.athletic.net/Edit/Photo/Tag.aspx#1068

To try the system with one of your own albums,

  1. visit your team homepage,
  2. click the edit photos link,
  3. hover over the album you wish to play with,
  4. write down the album number that shows up in the tool tip,
  5. replace the number in the above URL with your #,
  6. click the browser refresh to load the data.

!!! There is no promise that tagging data will be maintained between this alpha preview and the initial public release, so don’t spend hours tagging all of your photos.

Nothing amazing yet, but this was an easy addition, so I threw up code to show the slideshow on the athlete profile pages.  Here is my brothers profile:

I've tried variations of clicking, selecting, and hovering to find the correct number in the tool tip to insert into the tagging url - with no luck.  When I click "Edit Photos", my cursor doesn't turn into a clickable link when I hover over the linked Picasa album.  What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

mac

Try it now, it was a last minute change and I had not tried it in firefox, which happens to use a different attribute than IE for the purpose.  The number should pop up in a tool tip type display now.  (Tested it in 3 browsers :-)

There's a good man!  =)  I couldn't get it to work in Chrome or FF, and had to resort to using IE--but only just long enough to read the tool tip. =)

I tagged a whole bunch of photos last night, and really like the process, but I'm not sure that I understand it.  Some I tagged by just selecting the athlete's name from the first list, and others, I selected the season, meet, division, event, and athlete (with time).  What's the difference?  I thought it was great to have the photo linked to the exact event at which it was taken, but when the tagged photo is displayed, I can't see a difference between making all the selections or just choosing the name.  What am I missing?

Also, is there some way to default all the selections to those that were chosen last?  I don't know what everyone else's batch of photos look like, but we generally have a few right in a row of the same athlete from the same event.  It would be really fast to tag them all if there was a way to duplicate the previous selections.

Thanks, David.

The tag editor was the required first piece of the "picture", that will enable future improvements... I went ahead and updated the team homepages today to begin showing tag data along with the photos.  Your team page is a good example: http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/School.aspx?SchoolID=286

Not currently.  Thanks for the idea/request, as they will help shape the project as it continues.  ("Tested it in 3 browsers")  Yes, I use IE most, Josh in FireFox, and then we verify in Chrome.

Wow!

The photos with all the tags (with race information) is great.  I love the implementation. Thanks!  =)

I found a little misbehavior in Chrome on the Tag Your Photos page:  If you don't select any names off any lists, and just add a caption, and then click to get the next photo--without clicking on save--the whole thing sort of hangs up.  You can't tag any more photos.  You need to start from the beginning and reload the page.  FF works fine. I didn't try IE.
